Guwahati (Assam) [India], September 2 (ANI): Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday said that India “aimed to become a leading maritime country” after announcing details of the upcoming India Maritime Week 2025.
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) hosted a regional roadshow in Guwahati today as a precursor to India Maritime Week (IMW) 2025, which is scheduled to take place in Mumbai from October 27 to 31.
The minister confirmed that several maritime ministers from across the world would attend the event, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sonowal stated that the Prime Minister’s participation would add strength and global recognition to the initiative.
Speaking at a roadshow in Guwahati, Sonowal stressed the importance of India’s maritime vision. “Maritime ministers of several countries and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take part and his presence will strengthen us…Our aim is to make India a leading Maritime country.”
The Union Minister stated that traders, industry stakeholders, and experts from around 100 countries were expected to participate in the week-long programme. The event would provide a platform for collaboration, investment, and policy discussions to boost India’s maritime sector.
The Guwahati roadshow brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders from across the country to discuss the future of inland waterways, with a special focus on river cruise tourism and urban water transport systems.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), Sarbananda Sonowal, joined the show along with other senior officials of the Ministry and the IWAI.
Top officials, along with transport ministers from all the Northeastern states, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim, have been invited and are expected to attend the event.
Union Minister of State for MoPSW, Shantanu Thakur, along with the Secretary of MoPSW, TK Ramachandran, was present during the deliberations. (ANI)
