Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 26 (ANI): The West Bengal government, on Tuesday, made it clear that Britannia Industries Limited, a major FMCG brand, has no plans to exit the state and that the company is “fully committed” to West Bengal.
Dr Amit Mitra, Principal Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, issued this statement on behalf of the state government following a political row over the shutdown of Britannia’s Taratala plant.
At a press conference held at the State Secretariat, in Nabanna, Mitra said he spoke with the Managing Director of Britannia Industries, Varun Berry, who assured him that the company was “fully committed” to West Bengal.
“There’s a complete falsehood being stated not only on social media but also in some mainstream media that Britannia has run away from the state. The Managing Director of Britannia called and said that they are fully committed to West Bengal. They are producing between Rs 1,000-1,200 crore worth of products in the state, which will continue,” said Dr Amit Mitra on Tuesday while speaking to ANI.
Earlier, on June 24, in-charge of BJP’s National Information & Technology Dept and co-incharge West Bengal, Amit Malviya, tweeted on X about the shutdown of Britannia Industries’ factory, emphasizing how it starkly epitomizes the decline of Bengal, a region once celebrated for its cultural and intellectual contributions.
“Bengal, already mired in severe unemployment exacerbated by the TMC’s extortion and syndicate, now faces an even more dire predicament with the factory’s closure, triggering massive layoffs. Unfortunately, Bengal’s destiny is now ensnared by the twin curses of ‘Unionbaji’ and ‘Tolabaji’. The pressing question remains: when will Bengal be emancipated from this curse?”, Malviya added.
Amit Malviya ended the tweet with the hashtag “AntiBengalMamata”.
