The Chennai Mahila Court found the accused Gananesekaran guilty in the Anna University sexual assault case on Wednesday. He was found guilty of all eleven charges.
A second-year student of Anna University was sexually assaulted on the Anna University campus in December. After an investigation, the Chennai Police had arrested Gananesekaran in connection with the case.
In her December 23 complaint to police, the student alleged that an unidentified man had threatened and sexually assaulted her when she was talking to her friend on campus.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday hailed the state police, investigating officers, and government lawyers for the expeditious verdict in the Anna University sexual assault case.
The Chennai Mahila Court found the accused, Ganansekaran, guilty in the Anna University sexual assault case on Wednesday. He was found guilty of all eleven charges.
In a post on X, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said that the state’s police swiftly pursued the case and justice was delivered in just five months.
Stalin said he had told the police to prevent crime, and if any incident occurred, no criminal should escape. The criminals, he said, should be investigated expeditiously and punished.
He also slammed the opposition parties who had made allegations against the ruling DMK over the incident and said attempts were made to play “cheap politics”.
He said the government has shattered the “slander” being spread. “We will always ensure justice and the safety of women,” he said.
DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai has also welcomed the court decision.
“This is a welcome decision… This puts the Tamil Nadu police on the highest pedestal. The opposition wants to politicise this. Look at what’s happening with the Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh saga. The POCSO case has been dropped against him… He’s given a red carpet welcome, and he’s having big clout in the BJP party… DMK, on the contrary, when the FIR was registered, the accused was arrested immediately… Tamil Nadu officers have done a splendid job. Look at the speed with which this has happened… We hope that a stringent punishment is given to the accused. Since DMK has been in power, nobody, no matter who they are, which political party they belong to, or if they are rich, has been spared,” he said.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami said his party had protested against the incident, and the voices of the students were heard.
“The decision given by the court based on documents is welcome,” he said. (ANI)
