Sasaram (Bihar) [India], August 17 (ANI): Congress leader Pawan Khera on Sunday reacted to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s remarks during a press conference on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, stating that those who attacked the country’s democracy would have to be scared.
Speaking to ANI, Khera took a jab at the Election Commission and said, “Those who do wrong are scared… Those who attack the democracy of India will have to be scared. We are here to save the Constitution of India… When your master starts getting scared, you (Election Commission of India) will also get scared,” Khera told ANI.
The Congress leader further criticised the Election Commission, alleging it failed to respond to key concerns raised by the party.
“Those who were declared dead (by the ECI) were having tea with Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi. Didn’t they feel ashamed?… They should answer the questions raised by us,” he further stated.
Referring to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anurag Thakur, Khera questioned how he allegedly gained access to voter list data for six Lok Sabha constituencies.
“How could BJP MP Anurag Thakur have data of the voters’ list for six Lok Sabha seats within six days. We don’t have answers. Then he should file a complaint against Anurag Thakur. How did he get it? Has he given a notice to Anurag Thakur, BJP? He is acting like an agent of the BJP…” he added.
Earlier in the day, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while explaining the issue of duplicate Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPCI), assured that the EC had “taken measures to protect the rights of voters” while resolving such cases.
Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Gyanesh Kumar said, “Duplicate EPICs can happen in two ways. One, that a person who is in West Bengal, who is a different person, has one EPIC number, and another person who is in Haryana has the same EPIC number. When this question came up around March 2025, we discussed it and we solved it across the country. About three lakh such people were found, whose EPIC numbers were the same, so their EPIC numbers were changed.
He added that the Election Commission was acting cautiously to ensure the rights of voters are protected during the electoral roll revision process.
“The Election Commission stands like a rock with the voters. So, if this is done in a hurry, then any voter’s name can be deleted wrongly. Someone else’s name will be deleted in your place,” Kumar asserted. (ANI)
